Bridal Jewellery Trends in 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic has altered many aspects of human life, including the way momentous occasions are celebrated. With social restrictions in place, smaller, more intimate weddings have become the norm, alongside bridal jewellery pieces that truly embody connection and commitment.

Diamonds are the epitome of longevity so these precious gems remain a staple in weddings, beginning with the classic diamond engagement ring.

According to Bain & Co’s Global Diamond Industry Report 2020-2021, consumers continue to value diamond jewellery as a key element of weddings. Citing its 2020 consumer sentiment survey, Bain & Co said 60 per cent to 70 per cent of respondents in the US, China and India view diamonds as an essential part of engagements.

The market’s growing penchant for individuality also takes new meaning during these trying times. Buyers are increasingly opting for coloured gemstone engagement rings not only for self-expression but to symbolise fresh beginnings.

Sapphires are among the top choices, inspired by Kate Middleton’s 12-carat blue sapphire engagement ring in 2010. Other popular coloured gem options include aquamarine, morganite, spinel, tourmaline, and tanzanite, to name a few.

The Gemological Institute of America remarked, “With coloured gemstones, you can add more depth of meaning to the engagement ring. You could include your birthstone and your partner’s birthstone, alone or with diamonds. Coloured gems also come with historic symbolism, and you could pick one that inspires you.”

Design is another significant consideration. Sentimental, meaningful jewellery reflects the quiet intimacy of small weddings and gatherings. Heirloom pieces that honour family relationships are also favoured wedding essentials.

Statement earrings and rings, alongside gem-studded chokers and tiaras, in progressive and exceptional designs further add sparkle and elegance to a bride’s overall look.
